About Me!
Hi! My name is Papaya. I believe I was given the name, Papaya because I’m a distinct individual. (If you have tasted the fruit, papaya, that’s how I would describe it—-distinct.) I was born and raised in Brooklyn and I’m also Puerto Rican which has influenced the way I speak, my writing, and the way I see the world. My poetry is mostly in English with some Spanish words. My Latina culture is part of my identity so it is important to represent myself, my family, and my ancestors.
I have always been a writer. I have collections of journals and in elementary school, I first discovered poetry. I was in second or third grade when I remember learning what a poem is and how to write a poem. I started to take poetry seriously in middle school. Poetry became an outlet for me to express my emotions and anything I was going through at the time in any way I wanted. Poetry gives me the freedom to express myself genuinely. It has become a form of therapy and I have learned how to express myself in different ways through different topics. Whenever I am going through a difficult moment in my life, poetry is there for me. I have written many essays for school but they did not inspire me like poetry. I wrote essays because it was a task. Poetry is my passion, my true love. I can write a poem about anything. Sometimes I have to turn my thoughts off because a poem will come to me every day or keep me from sleeping at night. At times, I have woken up in the middle of the night just to write a poem. It is not something you can take away from me. It’s within me. Poetry is my energy.
